Eight Solar Myths We Hear Every Week in the Desert

Honest answers to the solar myths we hear most in the desert, from heat losses and battery sizing to roof warranties, maintenance, hail and the wait-for-better-technology argument.

We hear the same eight objections in kitchens across the valley, and most of them contain a grain of something true wrapped around a conclusion that does not follow from it. Some arrive from installers who learned the trade in another climate. Some come from a neighbour who had a bad experience with a company that no longer exists. A couple are pushed quite deliberately by people who would rather you did not buy solar at all.

Here they are, answered honestly, including the parts where the myth is partly right. We would rather you decide against solar for a good reason than in favour of it for a bad one, and we have talked plenty of people out of systems that would not have served them.

Myth: panels work worse in heat, so solar is pointless here

The first half is true. Photovoltaic modules lose output as cell temperature rises, and on a July afternoon in Indio those cells run far above the temperature at which they were rated. The conclusion is wrong, though. Production is driven by how much sunlight lands on the array and for how many hours, and this valley gets roughly 3,300 sun hours a year with very few overcast days. The heat penalty is real and the sunlight advantage is larger. An array here out-produces the same array in a cooler, cloudier market, and good design narrows the heat penalty further through standoff height, airflow and module selection. Myth: one battery will run my whole house through an August afternoon

This is the most common expectation gap we correct, and it is worth being blunt about. A single typical residential battery holds enough energy to carry the evening peak window, or to run an essential-loads panel through a night. It will not run whole-house air conditioning through a valley summer day. Multiple batteries change that answer, and so does pairing storage with a standby generator for long outages, which is the combination we most often recommend for households that genuinely cannot lose power. Our storage work and our generator work both cover how we size for that. Two separate limits apply to any battery, and people usually think about only one of them.

  • Capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours, sets how long the battery can supply a given load before it is empty.
  • Continuous power output, measured in kilowatts, sets how much it can supply at any single moment regardless of how full it is.
  • Surge capability, which determines whether it can start a large air conditioning compressor at all rather than simply tripping.
  • What you asked it to back up, since a battery protecting the whole panel drains far faster than one protecting a defined essential-loads subpanel.

Myth: solar voids your roof warranty

Roofing manufacturers do not generally void a warranty because an array exists. What they care about is who penetrated the roof, how it was done, and whether the work followed their requirements. A flashed, manufacturer-approved mount installed correctly is a normal roof penetration, no different in principle from a plumbing vent. A lag bolt driven through a shingle and sealed with a smear of caulk is a leak waiting for the first real rain, and that will cause you a problem regardless of what any warranty says. Ask a contractor which mounting and flashing system they use, what workmanship warranty covers the penetrations themselves, and what your roofing manufacturer requires. On a foam roof, ask specifically how the coating is restored around each attachment.

Myth: you never pay an electric bill again

You stay connected to the grid, and staying connected costs money. Solar reduces the energy component of your bill, which is the largest part for most valley homes in summer, but it does not remove everything. Anyone showing you a projection with a zero on the bottom line is either ignoring these charges or has not read your tariff, and both are reasons to be careful with the rest of their numbers.

Myth: a bigger array is always better

It used to be closer to true. Under the old net metering arrangement, a surplus exported at midday came back at nearly full value later in the day, so extra capacity was rarely wasted. Under net billing that is no longer how it works, and energy exported at midday earns a fraction of what you pay for energy at seven in the evening. Past the point where the array covers what you actually consume, each additional module buys you considerably less. Additional modules also mean additional weight, penetrations, racking and cost. Right-sizing the array and putting the difference into storage or into cutting consumption is usually a better use of the same money.

Myth: you should wait for better technology

Photovoltaic modules improve incrementally, not in leaps. The panel available in three years will be somewhat more efficient than today's and it will still be a silicon module bolted to a rack. Meanwhile you pay full retail for every kilowatt-hour through every summer you spend waiting. The other half of the argument cuts against waiting too: rate structures, interconnection rules and incentive programmes change over time, and they have not been trending in the customer's favour. We will not tell you the sky is falling and we will not tell you to sign tonight. We will tell you that waiting has a price, and the price is the summers in between.

Myth: panels need constant maintenance

There are no moving parts in a photovoltaic array and the maintenance burden is genuinely light. It is not zero here, though, and the desert is the reason. Rainfall is low enough that soiling does not clear itself the way it does elsewhere, and blowing dust settles on glass through most of the year, so periodic washing matters here in a way it does not in a wetter climate. Beyond that, the routine is watching production for unexplained drops, checking connections and torque after years of thermal cycling, keeping the array clear of pigeons and rodents, and having an inverter looked at when it starts reporting faults. That is an annual visit, not a chore.

The systems I get called out to are almost never failing because of dust or heat. They fail because of a connection somebody rushed at install, or a rodent that found an unprotected cable run under the array.

Myth: hail and blowing dust will destroy the panels

Modules sold in this market are qualified against hail impact as part of standard certification testing, and hail is an uncommon event in the Coachella Valley to begin with. Dust is the real local factor, and it costs you production rather than glass. What actually damages panels here is people cleaning them badly, because abrasive brushes, harsh chemicals and pressure washers do more harm in an afternoon than a season of dust ever will. Wind is the condition deserving genuine engineering attention, since the San Gorgonio corridor moves real air, and that is a racking and attachment question rather than a panel question.
