Sizing a system honestly is the most environmental thing we do.

This page covers the parts of our work that carry a real environmental consequence and that we actually control: how a system is sized, how it is maintained, where the old hardware goes, and which hours of the day it covers.

Four commitments, and the reasoning that sits behind them. None of them ask you to take a number on trust.

Sustainability language in this trade usually arrives as a figure nobody can check: tons of carbon avoided, trees planted, homes powered. We are a contractor. The things we can be held to are how a system is sized, how much water it takes to keep it working, who does the labour, and where the equipment goes at the end of its life.

This valley sharpens every one of those. Water here is managed as a permanent condition rather than a drought that passes, so a cleaning routine that runs a hose across an array for an hour is not something we are willing to defend. Summer afternoons put the regional grid under genuine strain, which makes the hours a system covers matter as much as the kilowatt-hours it produces. And the dust never stops, so an array nobody services loses production quietly for years while its owner assumes everything is fine.

That is why honest sizing sits at the top of the list. An oversized array is the easiest thing in this industry to sell and the hardest to justify under current export rules, because the surplus it makes at midday is worth very little. Panels that were never needed were still manufactured, shipped, mounted, and one day taken down again. We would rather quote the smaller system and explain why, even when the larger one would have been the better sale.

Every system sized honestly

An oversized array sells well and performs badly under NEM 3.0 export rates. We size to consumption and tell customers when a smaller system is the better financial outcome, even though it is the smaller sale.

Equipment recovered, not landfilled

Replaced modules, inverters and batteries go to certified recycling and recovery partners. We keep the disposal documentation and provide it on request.

Hired and trained locally

Our crews live in the valley. The apprenticeship programme run with College of the Desert brings people into a licensed trade without requiring them to leave the region to find it.

Water-conscious maintenance

Array cleaning uses deionised water and low-volume equipment. In a region under permanent drought management, washing panels with a hose for an hour is not defensible.

What a system displaces

The hour a kilowatt-hour arrives in matters more than the annual total.

A system does not displace electricity in the abstract. It displaces whatever the grid was going to run in order to serve that load at that particular hour, and across a single valley day that changes completely.

Midday is the easy part, and it is also the crowded part. At noon in June this region has more sun than it knows what to do with, and so does every other array in the state, which is why a kilowatt-hour exported at that moment is now worth so little. The window that matters is four in the afternoon to nine at night. Air conditioning is still running, solar output is falling away, and the system leans on the fuel-burning plants held back for exactly that stretch. Power bought then is the most expensive on the rate schedule and the most carbon-intensive on the grid.

So load shifting has become worth more than raw production. Sending power out at one in the afternoon and buying it back at seven in the evening is a poor trade in both directions, for the household and for the region. Storing it and spending it in the evening is the entire point of a battery. A right-sized array with storage, dispatched into the peak, does more good than a larger array with nowhere to put its surplus.

  • Displacement where it counts

    Evening discharge replaces the most carbon-intensive hours on the grid rather than the cleanest ones. The same stored kilowatt-hour does more good at seven in the evening than it does at noon.

  • Less strain at the tightest hour

    A household or a business that rides the four-to-nine window on stored power is load the regional system does not have to serve at the moment it has the least room.

  • Backup without a running engine

    Storage carries most short outages silently. Where a standby generator is genuinely needed, we scope it around what the battery cannot cover rather than as a substitute for it.

  • Production kept rather than lost

    Dust soiling and unnoticed faults take output away quietly. Monitoring with fault alerting and a maintenance schedule keep an array displacing grid power instead of drifting downward for years.

  • Existing arrays recovered first

    A repaired system is generation that already exists and has already spent its manufacturing carbon. Bringing one back uses a fraction of the material that new capacity does.

  • Electrification in the right order

    An EV charger or a heat pump added to an undersized service is a problem postponed. We check the panel and run the load calculation before anything else is hung off it.

Nineteen homes in one HOA, permitted as a single programme

Challenge

Individual homeowners in the association each faced the same architectural review, the same permit queue and the same site conditions, and each was paying for that process separately. Several had been quoted wildly different prices for effectively identical roofs.

Approach

We prepared a single architectural submittal for the association covering a consistent array layout and conduit routing, then ran the individual permits behind it. Roofs were surveyed as a group, which meant one mobilisation instead of nineteen and one consistent set of flashing details across the community.

Outcome

Nineteen households moved onto generation that displaces grid consumption during the valley’s highest-demand hours. Four added storage, shifting evening load off the grid entirely. The shared submittal removed the review step that had stalled several of the households for over a year.

Challenge

Refrigerated storage runs hardest exactly when the grid is most stressed and the rate schedule is most expensive. The facility was drawing heavily through the late-afternoon peak, which is both the costliest power to buy and the most carbon-intensive power on the system.

Approach

Because the site is served by Imperial Irrigation District rather than Southern California Edison, the modelling had to be built against the IID schedule specifically. We sized storage to carry the refrigeration load through the peak window and set dispatch to charge from midday production rather than from the grid.

Outcome

The refrigeration load now runs on stored solar through the peak window instead of drawing from the grid at its dirtiest and most expensive hours. Product stayed cold through two grid events during the first season, which was not the goal of the project but was the outcome the operations manager mentioned first.

Challenge

When a solar company leaves the market its customers keep the hardware and lose the support. Across the valley there are arrays quietly underproducing for years because monitoring went offline and nobody noticed. The equipment is still good. The relationship that would have caught the fault is gone.

Approach

We adopt these systems rather than turning them away. Every adoption starts with restoring monitoring so the problem can be measured, followed by a physical inspection, a warranty review against the original manufacturer, and an honest assessment of what is worth repairing versus what has reached end of life.

Outcome

The environmental case here is strong and often overlooked. A repaired array is generation that already exists, already embodied its manufacturing carbon, and simply needs to be working again. Recovering an underperforming system displaces grid power at a fraction of the material cost of building new capacity.
